About John Halkes

John Halkes is an Anglican priest now retired from parish ministry but still much involved with cathedral and church art and architecture - and the debate on art and spirituality. He is an Honorary Canon of Truro Cathedral and chairs their Fabric Advisory Committee. Before ordination in 1990 he was Director of Newlyn Orion (Newlyn Art Gallery) and a Governor of the then Falmouth College of Arts. From 1976-1979 he was a member of South West Arts - Visual Arts Advisory panel and was chairman from 1979-983.

In 1989 he curated the first major solo exhibition of Michael Finn's work at Newlyn Art Gallery and installed a substantial exhibition of Finn's sculptures and paintings in Truro Cathedral in 1996. For the last twenty years of Michael Finn's life he became a close friend and colleague of the artist and of Michael's wife Cely. Michael invited him to give the address at the opening of the Falmouth exhibition in 2001.

After Michael Finn's death the Finn family asked John to administer the disposal of the studio estate on their behalf.
